Global Nano Network (GNN) has secured funding from Innovate UK/UKRI for Project DRY SALT, adapting our solvent-free dry processing to sodium-ion battery electrodes. This addresses manufacturing challenges in emerging chemistries like sodium-ion, sulfur, and solid-state batteries.
Conventional cell manufacturers depend on wet processes with toxic solvents and energy-intensive ovens. Our dry processing eliminates these, cutting costs, energy use, and environmental impact. GNN has partnered with CEMCO, Swansea University, Batri, and HyPower System to develop and test dry-processed sodium-ion cathodes using our coated current collector and manufacturing innovation. We are building prototype cells to benchmark performance, durability, and manufacturability against conventional wet-processed electrodes.
Project DRY SALT is proving dry processing handles sodium-ion’s unique mechanical behaviour, compaction, and moisture sensitivity, delivering:
- Superior electrode adhesion and robustness
- Reduced interfacial resistance
- Enhanced cycle stability
- Minimized moisture-related performance loss
Our modular systems integrate into gigafactories of all sizes, enabling retrofits or new builds for cleaner, lower-cost manufacturing and stronger domestic supply chains.
GNN is always looking for collaborations with cell manufacturers, suppliers, OEMs, and labs to integrate systems, co-develop processes, and pilot next generation electrodes.
Thanks to our partners: CEMCO, Swansea University, Batri, HyPower System, and Innovate UK/UKRI.
